ICOM CECA CONFERENCES 2019

Kyoto, Japan
September 1-7,  2019.

Theme:

ROLES OF MUSEUM EDUCATION: SUPPORTING SELF AND SOCIETY

The Annual Conference is the major event in the CECA year. It takes place in a different location around the world each year and lasts for several days which usually includes at least one excursion as well as other opportunities to see local museums in the host city. There is normally a call for abstracts a couple of months in advance, and any CECA member can propose a session. The conference committee for that year then selects the final programme.

During the ICOM 25th general conference, Museums as Cultural Hubs: The Future of Tradition, which will be held in Kyoto from September 1-7, 2019, taking into consideration the concept of hubs both as networks and cores, the CECA Board suggests the following as a main theme for CECA Conference: Roles of Museum Education: Supporting Self and Society. Museums have always been perceived as places to bring together past and present. Since the 1970’s, this time period was expanded to include the social role of museums to build a better future. Museums were asked to assume a more active social role, dealing with controversial subjects in challenging times. Museum education has a central role to play in this context, by linking museums to communities and society, and dealing with each visitor as unique, to contribute to the support and development of both self and society.

During the Conference we will discuss:
1. How museum education can contribute to the development of the human being?
2. What could be the connections between museum education and society’s development?
3. How does museum education contribute to the mission of museums?
4. What kind of museum education activities could a museum implement? To/for whom? For what purpose?
5. How could museum educators support self and society?

These questions could be discussed through the following topics:
a. Museum education for individual visitors and groups;
b. Museum education for audiences and non-audiences; and,
c. Working outside the museum walls.
