As a Presidential Academic Fellow, you will join one of the UK’s foremost art history departments. Strongly interdisciplinary, we have close ties to the Institute for Cultural Practices, to other disciplines and research centres across the University, and to a wide range of museums, galleries and venues across the city’s award-winning cultural sector. With a specialism in any area of non-Western or global art history, you’ll contribute new areas of expertise to the study of the arts and cultural heritage. As a Presidential Academic Fellow, you will bring interdisciplinary expertise in the arts, with research interests focusing on one or more of art history/visual studies, music, live arts and performance. Carrying out research that seeks actively to engage with the University’s cultural partners in the city and beyond, your specialisms may include the creative and/or cultural industries; cultural policy studies; professional practice; community arts, education and development; digital technologies; global cultures; and/or performance studies. You’ll contribute to an ambitious and timely expansion of scholarship at Manchester relating to the creative economy. In particular, you will be part of an exciting and growing programme of knowledge exchange, public engagement and professional development opportunities.

Presidential Academic Fellowships in humanities and social sciences offer a salary of £39,992–£49,149, plus £3,500 per annum for research support costs and access to key technology platforms. Following a four-year probationary period, and subject to satisfactory performance, you will then transfer to an appropriate academic contract.

Presidential Academic Fellows will do no teaching or minimal teaching in the first year and minimal teaching in the second year. Thereafter teaching would increase with each subsequent year of the fellowship.

To join us, you will need a relevant PhD or equivalent qualification. You’ll bring to the role a sustained record of publication output. Crucially, you will demonstrate the ability to develop a coherent world-leading research programme, with new concepts and ideas to extend intellectual understanding. You have what it takes to organise resources and deliver results to deadlines. Your excellent communication and interpersonal skills also equip you to build a team, and to inspire and engage students. The determination to win your own funding will be key to your success.
